The Intense Demands of Rugby

For those new to rugby union, the front row of the scrum – made up of two prop forwards and a hooker – is the engine room of the forwards pack. In days gone by, the front row, especially in amateur clubs were mostly heavy, overweight and slower than most other players. The modern game of rugby however, is very different. Due to the intense physical demands of the game, players are more aware of body conditioning and nutrition than ever before. This is as true for amateur clubs as it is in the professional game. Donald Grant plays in the front row for Musselburgh RFC, a Scottish rugby amateur club in the highly competitive BT National League Division 1. Here is Donald’s experience of the Nutritious Lolly Whole Body Plan.

Donald’s Experience of the Whole-Body Plan

Rugby is an 80-minute long game of physical endurance which requires the right fuel intake to help players last the pace. Donald had set a goal to learn more about proper fuel intake to help him compete effectively during the game and recover more quickly afterwards. He said, “I wanted to become leaner but also maintain my muscle mass which is needed in the front row.” So, what did he think of the Whole-Body plan? “It was very easy to follow and helped me prepare as much as possible in terms of fuel and hydration which allows me to play to my potential. I’m a huge fan of stir-fries and curries for quickness, and supplements are a huge factor in my routine. Once I saw the results Nutritious Lolly delivered I was really encouraged.

In terms of challenges Donald, like most of us has a sweet tooth. “I love desserts, so I had to learn to adapt to responsible snacking.” Responsible snacking helps to avoid the highs and lows of sugar intake and delivers a more even blood sugar throughout the day. “I always felt supported by Lolly though so it helped me focus on my end goal.”

The Main Changes in Donald’s Eating Habits

One of the main foods Donald reduced from his diet was bread. He also cut out high-sugar dishes such as macaroni cheese (saving them for his post-match clubhouse treat). Instead he swapped the simple carbs for more complex carbs and proteins such as wholegrain rice, beans and pulses – especially on training and game days when it’s important to have a decent pre-match food intake. Donald also ate a variety of good quality proteins throughout the week such as white meat, red meat and fish to repair his muscles and fuel his body for longer. He also swapped cow’s milk for almond milk and ate, green veg with most meals.

The Results

So, did Donald achieve the results he was looking for? “Yes. The small changes made a huge difference. I’ve lost body-fat, I feel a lot leaner, not bloated at all now…and I even have abs! My digestive health is a lot better and I have loads more energy which means I don’t get tired in the afternoon anymore. Instead, I fall asleep at night as soon as my head hits the pillow, which means my body can recover and repair itself while I sleep. The Nutritious Lolly plan definitely works if you work it and this is one very happy client.”

What was your main reason for going on the Plan?

I wanted to feel comfortable wearing my bikini on holiday. Although I’m relatively slim I felt that I had a ‘jelly belly’ so decided to try the 6-week Whole-Body Plan to improve the definition in my tummy area. I knew that a mix of eating better, drinking more water and exercise each day would help but subscribing to the plan definitely gave me more focus.

How did you find the experience?

The plan was really easy to follow and even although I’ve completed the six weeks I’ll eat and drink this this from now on. Plus, it fitted in with our lifestyle. I’ve since made a few tweaks to the family meals – who’d have guessed that kids would prefer wholegrain rice to the white stuff I’ve fed them all their lives?

And the exercises?

The exercises were great. Just 10-mins a day is very easy to stick to. My favourites were the first two especially the abs one.

What results did you achieve after the six weeks were over?

The fat bits around my bra strap have gone, my jelly belly is smaller and I’ve lost inches in all areas…I’ve even got a bit of definition in my abs! My digestive health has seen a vast improved as it used to be sluggish and, I’m sleeping really well. Also, I’ve seen an improvement in my skin through drinking the recommended amount of water every day.

If recommending Nutritious Lolly to friends and family, what would you say?

The plan is so simple, it’s not a diet, it’s about changing habits…and prosecco is allowed… which was very important to me!!

What were your reasons for wanting to embark on a nutrition plan?

I train very intensely and I am very competitive.  I needed more energy for training and knew that if I could improve my diet it would help with performance.   With that in mind I am a very picky eater so knew this would be a challenge for Lolly.

What were your goals and expectations?

I wanted to train harder for longer, build muscle mass, have more energy and win more competitions.  There was a bit of a list.

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Lolly makes everything easy.  She worked around the things I like to eat and created lots of solutions and meal ideas that would work for everyone in the family.  She provided continued support and tweaked things along the way so that things were constantly improving. I learned more every week about nutrition and how it can work for me.  She makes everything easy so I was surprised as I really enjoyed it!

Did the Plan improve your overall competitiveness in your Sport?

Yes definitely.  I had so much more energy.  I never fatigued in training and built muscle mass which is exactly what I wanted.  I also felt more confident!

Did you follow the recipes and recommendations for supplementation, recovery meals, protein intake?  If so, did you find them useful, quick and convenient?

Everything was easy to follow and easy to adapt to work and training and everyday life!  This was the biggest surprise.

Have you won competitions/titles/galas?  Please provide a list including personal best times, medals, awards and titles.

I won Gold in the Eastern District Championships three times. Scottish Champion.  I have boxed for Scotland.  I also won Best East Lothian Boxer four times.

What was the hardest part of the Plan?

I am a picky eater and not great when it comes to trying new things although Lolly worked around this and provide solutions for things that I did really like.

Did you feel supported by Lolly during the process?

Yes. She was fantastic!

Have you noticed a difference in fat loss / inch loss and muscle mass?

I burned more body fat and built muscle mass.  This was a key element of what I wanted to achieve so that I felt stronger and more powerful.

Have your energy levels improved?

There was a significant difference in energy levels.  Sleep quality improved as well.

Did you reach your goal and how did that feel?

Yes, it felt amazing!  I would recommend everyone to do the Plan.  It is much easier than you think it will be.  My main goal was to eat healthier as my diet was not good.

What changes have you made to your nutrition and fitness since completing the Whole-Body Plan/ tailored Nutrition Plan?

I understand the importance of protein for Sport.  What to eat and when.  All I need to know about supplementing my diet and what to eat for recovery meals as well as how much water to drink and when to include Electrolytes and how to vary my diet so that I don’t get bored and I am getting enough of everything.  I recover from training faster now too so I can go back training the next day without having tired muscles.

What were your reasons for wanting to embark on a nutrition plan?

To resolve food intolerances and improve my diet.

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Surprisingly so, I thought it was going to be really tough but because of the simplicity of the plan, if you just stick to the basic principles it is so effective!

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Yes, everything was explained clearly and continuous support was provided during and beyond the plan.

Did the Plan improve your overall competitiveness in sport?

I only do sport for enjoyment and don’t compete. I did feel stronger, fitter and generally more alert as a result of the plan.

Did you follow the recipes and recommendations for supplementation, recovery meals and protein intake?  If so, did you find them useful, quick and convenient?

I did follow recommendations and found them very useful and easy to prepare. I found it a great benefit to prepare meals /smoothies / snacks in advance, which meant I wouldn’t skip meals at work.

What was the hardest part of the Plan?

Eliminating all foods I was intolerant to was the most difficult part of the plan (and getting used to spirulina).

Did you feel supported by Lolly during the process?

Yes, definitely.  She was always there to answer any queries via phone or email and was really supportive throughout.  She knew exactly how I would feel throughout the week and provided great encouragement and support throughout.

Have you noticed a difference in fat loss/inch loss and muscle mass?

I did notice a difference.  I didn’t have too much body fat before doing the plan, but I lost what was there during the plan.

Has your digestive health improved?

This was what I wanted to improve most of all and it did improve drastically in a short time.  This is what gave me most satisfaction from the plan.

Have your energy levels improved?

Yes, definitely.  It was quite a noticeable difference in a short space of time.

Have you noticed a difference to the quality of your sleep?

Yes, especially after exercise.

Did you reach your goal and how did that feel?

I did reach my goal and it felt a real achievement, as it was something I had been trying to do for many years.

What changes have you made to your nutrition and fitness since completing the Whole-Body Plan/ Lorraine’s tailored Nutrition Plan?

I eat more fruit and vegetables and now know the foods that I am intolerant to.  I used to skip meals and now I eat at regular times in the day.

If recommending Nutritious Lolly to friends and family, what would you say?

Go for it!  She can help you achieve whatever you want to and provides fantastic support and advice throughout.

Anything else you would like to add?

The on-going support (newsletters, videos etc.) are useful too and always keep nutrition in your thoughts without it taking over your life.

Name: Rachael Steedman

Age: 38

Occupation: Human Resources

What were your reasons for wanting to embark on a nutrition plan?

I exercise regularly 3 – 4 times per week, I consider myself relatively fit for my age, running half marathons occasionally but no matter what my exercise regime I never seemed to lose any weight, so I came to the conclusion that my nutrition must be the problem as I’ve been carrying about half a stone since having my girls.

What were your goals and expectations?

I wanted to lose half a stone, improve my nutritional habits and also my digestion. I have inflammatory bowel disease and so I felt that if I improved my nutrition, this might also ease my symptoms.

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Surprisingly so, I thought it was going to be really tough but because of the simplicity of the plan, if you just stick to the basic principles it is so effective!

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Surprisingly so, I thought it was going to be really tough but because of the simplicity of the plan, if you just stick to the basic principles it is so effective!

Did the Plan fit around your lifestyle – work life, family life etc?

Yes, at first it took slightly more meal planning than usual but we do plan our meals anyway to avoid waste. Often it was just a case of adding more salad or veg to my plate, and protein and less/no carbs depending on whether I was food combining or not that evening. I also found that my husband and youngest daughter really liked whole wheat or wholegrain alternatives (in terms of pasta/rice) when we were having pasta or rice dishes, so better for all of the family.

Did you follow the recipes?  If so, did you find them useful, quick and convenient?

I followed a few recipes, as my husband would testify, I’m not great at following a recipe but I like to take ideas and then do my own thing with them depending on what’s in the cupboard.

How did you find the 10-minute exercise videos and which were your favourites?

The thing I liked was that they were just 10 minutes long, I have signed up to fit for life so that I can make best use of these whenever I have 10 minutes to fit in. I tend to do a fair bit of exercise anyway, so for me personally it was the nutritional aspects I was focusing on. However, I did find the abs exercises really good, as this is probably one of my weakest areas.

What was the hardest part of the Plan?

I won’t lie, I do enjoy wine, some might say a little too much. So initially I found reducing my alcohol intake the most difficult thing. However, I did like that I didn’t need to rule it out completely and just applied more discipline whilst still enjoying a few glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday evening.

Did you feel supported by Lolly during the process?

100%, the support was really valuable and a real key to my success with the plan!

Have you noticed a difference in fat loss or inch loss?

Yes, absolutely, I didn’t record inch loss specifically, but I lost half a stone and dropped a dress size. I also think I am much more toned than I was, half a stone doesn’t sound like a lot but I was 8 ½ stone to begin with so losing that ½ stone was something I had tried to do for years and never succeeded!

Has your digestive health improved?

Absolutely, Lolly suggested I take probiotics and I now combine these and chia seeds as well as lots and lots of water in to my daily routine and it has all made a really big difference. I know it sounds like a cliché but I really suffered from bloating beforehand and I rarely do now, and if I do I know exactly what’s caused it.

Have your energy levels improved?

I would say I’m a fairly energetic person anyway, but I have noticed a slight difference, probably the biggest impact here is from the reduction in my alcohol consumption.

Have you noticed a difference to the quality of your sleep?

Less sure about this, I sleep pretty well anyway though!

Did you reach your goal and how did that feel?

Delighted to say yes! It was a massive sense of achievement, and if I had realised it would be this easy I would’ve done it years ago.

What changes have you made to your nutrition and fitness since completing the Whole-Body Plan?

My nutritional habits have completely transformed, I eat less bread and pasta than I used to, I snack much more of fruit and nuts, drinks lots more water and food combine 2/3 evenings a week. I do have the odd weekend where I still over indulge and I don’t give myself a hard time for it, I just know to start the next week as I mean to go on.

If recommending Nutritious Lolly to friends and family, what would you say?

I already have recommended to 3 or 4 people and lots of people have commented on the visible difference in how I look. This really worked for me, the simplicity of the plan is fantastic, anyone can do this – all you need is a little bit of motivation and discipline and you will see fantastic results. As someone with a big appetite, the best bit about it is there is no starving yourself and Lolly is right, you never, ever need to feel hungry on the plan!

Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks Lorraine, for all your help, support and encouragement – you have enabled me to make changes I haven’t wanted to make for years but just didn’t quite know how!

How did you hear about Nutritious Lolly?

Facebook advertising

What were your reasons for wanting to embark on a nutrition plan?

Liked the sound of the general health aspect rather than a fad diet plan

What were your goals and expectations?

To feel healthier, more energy/less sluggish, new recipes, lifestyle swaps.

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Yes, I liked how it was broken down into new content every week otherwise likely I would have got info overload all at once.

Did the Plan fit around your lifestyle – work life, family life etc?

Yes, that was the big bonus as it was achievable to do.

Did you follow the recipes? If so, did you find them useful, quick and convenient?

I have loved the new recipes and liked that many ingredients are used in a few and some were things I had anyway in cupboard. I felt a bit stuck in a rut with meals and recycled same dishes all the time. The recipes are not overly complicated so they are easy to do and then continue to repeat. Very tasty and flavoursome and unlike a ‘diet’, I found I could make them for others as not obvious ‘diet’ food which can be bland. This makes the recipes flexible.

How did you find the 10-minute exercise videos and which were your favourites?

Favourites are no 2, 3 and 4. I love that they are so quick and 10 mins is achievable. I also love that I can just do them in any clothes so no hassle needing to get changed etc which often puts me off as takes up more time

What was the hardest part of the Plan?

Trying to resist sugar treats. I don’t eat processed foods anyway and cook with many of the ingredients already, but I’ve got a sweet tooth and try to resist, mainly because my will power is not good. I can’t just have a little bit, I always want more. Think this will be my downfall but will try to think of 80/20 rule and incorporate as treats.

Did you feel supported by Lolly during the process?

Yes, I tried to log into live question and answers but when couldn’t, felt the level of communication was good. When asked anything, response was quick back. I liked the pragmatic and realistic approach to the plan that Lolly got across.

Have you noticed a difference in fat loss or inch loss?

Inch loss… particularly across stomach area. Don’t weigh myself so don’t know about weight but feel leaner and clothes looser.

Has your digestive health improved?

For a time I was bit constipated although not sure why as eating lots of fruit veg/water etc. Contacted Lorraine and got advice. I now snack on dried dates and prunes which help.

Have your energy levels improved?

Yes, definitely. I notice a difference and after a weekend of not being as rigid/strict with myself I do notice I am more sluggish.

Have you noticed a difference to the quality of your sleep?

I always sleep well but don’t feel as tired during day so perhaps the quality has improved.

Did you reach your goal and how did that feel?

Main goal was to feel less sluggish and feel healthier – def achieved this!

What changes have you made to your nutrition and fitness since completing the Whole-Body Plan?

I now try to do the exercises daily or every 2 days as do feel they make a difference, keen to continue this.

I also eat a more varied diet and consider sugar content. I am more educated re high fat/good fats and therefore enjoy meals more, that I used to think of as high fat e.g. curries with full-fat coconut milk. I snack healthier and have discovered tasty salads so I don’t feel like I am restricting myself in any way. I definitely consider carbs more and have found alternatives in freekah, bulgar wheat and quinoa rather than white rice and pasta which I now realise I was eating quite a bit of.

If recommending Nutritious Lolly to friends and family, what would you say?

That it is realistic and achievable as it is a long-term lifestyle regime rather than a set ‘diet’. Also, that it is not restrictive and is straightforward to follow. I would also say at first you go to the toilet loads but your body gets used to it and calms down.

Anything else you would like to add?

I felt that the ethos of 80/20 was great as if I had a bad day/weekend when I had too many treats/drinks, that I just started over again on Monday and didn’t beat myself up. I think on any other plan, I may have given up and just resorted back to old ways but psychologically this plan makes it easy just to get back on track.

Name: Margaret Ross

Age: 60

What were your reasons for wanting to embark on a nutrition plan?

Like most, I know what I should and shouldn’t eat. I had reached a point where my clothes didn’t fit the way they used to. I wanted a no-nonsense plan that would be flexible and easy to follow, not a regime that was about counting calories or fat content or cutting out things I enjoy. Lorraine’s plan seemed to offer this.

What were your goals and expectations?

I wanted my clothes to fit again so it was about inch loss rather than weight loss. I also wanted to get back to putting good food in my body so I would have more energy.

Did you find the Plan easy to follow and understand?

Completely. I liked the weekly videos highlighting different things about food combining, good fats and bad fats. I liked the 10-min exercise videos – easy to fit in either at lunchtime in the office or at home. In fact, I got some colleagues to join me a few times and they really felt the benefit.

Did the Plan fit around your lifestyle – work life, family life etc?

Both my partner and I work full time and had fallen into the habit of making do – getting home after 7 and then “cooking” something that was quick: pizza, a “pierce film” microwave job. We both enjoy good fresh food and had just got out of the habit of PLANNING meals. Starting with some of the recipes given by Lorraine, it was easy to build on this. The slow cooker and the blender are no longer kept in the high cupboard above the oven (involving standing on a chair for me to retrieve) as we use them almost every other day.

Did you follow the recipes?  If so, did you find them useful, quick and convenient?

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that cooking from scratch takes too long. Lorraine’s recipes were and are a good “starter pack”. We both love fish – how quick is baked salmon with some couscous with chickpeas, chillies, seeds and slices of orange; or halloumi, rocket, avocado and pomegranate seeds (couscous as well if wanted), thrown into a container for lunch then just drizzled with some balsamic dressing when about to eat? This really is FAST FOOD and much nicer than a Tesco’s sandwich!   We fight over the blender – my partner for making healthy soups in enough quantities for several lunches and me for great smoothies. I never considered adding nuts to smoothies before. Some have been trial and error and occasionally the colours have been a bit scary but all have been filling and a great way to start the day. OK, of course we stray off the beaten track – occasionally throw some cooked ham in with the mushrooms for an omelette but, to be honest, once on the plan, processed food tastes processed, and is not nearly as enjoyable. The lamb tagine is my favourite recipe – my local butcher will go out of business if I stop cooking it!

How did you find the 10-minute exercise videos and which were your favourites?

Brilliant! I particularly like the hip and thigh exercises but because the different routines are only 10 minutes, I don’t avoid the Abs blast as they are over quickly. Usually end up doing 20 minutes following up on the abs with the hip and thigh exercises while shouting answers at the TV during Pointless!

What was the hardest part of the Plan?

Initially the water intake. I do drink a lot of water but found going beyond 2 litres was hard. However, after discussing with Lorraine, she put my mind at rest that 2 litres was acceptable.

Being Irish, I was brought up with the habit that you didn’t have a cup of tea without having something to eat (usually something sweet!!). Because I drink water more than tea, this was not a huge issue but the habit was there so, a cup of tea about 8.30pm always seemed much less enjoyable. Not having biscuits or chocolate in the house of course helped – can’t eat them if not there!! I don’t really like herbal teas but I do take my tea black so moving to Rooibos tea I found made the longing for a biscuit less intense. Of course I occasionally have something sweet and not remotely nutritious  – probably 2-3 times a week but not every day and I really have not found this hard as the weeks have progressed – probably because my body is satisfied by the quantity and quality of the food  I am eating.

Did you feel supported by Lolly during the process?

Yes. Pragmatic, down to earth advice. And the weekly messages were always encouraging.

Have you noticed a difference in fat loss or inch loss?

Clothes fit again. I have lost both pounds and inches.

Has your digestive health improved?

Yes – never ever constipated!!!

Have your energy levels improved?

Yes. I go to a couple of aerobics classes each week and my stamina has improved; and playing Star Wars with 3-year old granddaughter leaves me feeling energised rather than shattered!! Climbing the hill at the first hole at the Glen in North Berwick has also got easier!!!

Have you noticed a difference to the quality of your sleep?

I am genuinely tired when I go to bed and, although I have never been a great sleeper, I do wake up feeling rested rather than weary.

Did you reach your goal and how did that feel?

Well, one objective was to be able to get into clothes that used to fit and didn’t so that has definitely been achieved. However, the other was to stop mistreating my body with poor quality food and that is a lifestyle change that will continue.

What changes have you made to your nutrition and fitness since completing the Whole-Body Plan?

I don’t count calories or read contents of food in the supermarket – a carrot is a carrot, so buying fresh means not having to check for additives. Buying fresh rather than processed food, planning meals (not on the basis of Monday is this, Tuesday is this…. but having nutritious food in the house) means we can revert to how our parents used to cook – what is there in the cupboard/fridge that I can rustle up. AND we throw very little out. If some veg looking a bit suspect – make a soup!

If recommending Nutritious Lolly to friends and family, what would you say?

Like all aims and goals in life, YOU, the individual, have to want to achieve this. Nutritious Lolly gives a plan, not a diet. That means you can tailor it to you, experiment, stick with the good food combinations you like, don’t force yourself to eat stuff you don’t enjoy. It is a flexible plan so you can make it work. Eat food you enjoy, following the portion recommendations, take some regular exercise and the benefits are exponential: the more you eat tasty, good quality food and the more you exercise, the more you enjoy both these things and you feel great.

Anything else you would like to add?

The expression “to go on a diet” itself highlights that you will eventually “come off the diet”. Without exception, everyone I know (myself included) who has followed diet plans (some whackier than others), craves stuff that they are not permitted to eat. As soon as they reach target weight, they start having the occasional reward and eventually just go back to their old ways. They think about food almost all the time!!!

Food is fuel. With this plan, because I am giving my body the combination of essential nutrients needed, my cravings for rubbish are diminished. When I have my wine on a Friday and Saturday night, I don’t feel guilty, I don’t feel the need to starve myself the next day to compensate. I enjoy it. But I also look forward to the good food I am eating. Many years ago, MARS (chocolate bar) had an advert with the strapline: “A Mars a Day helps you work, rest and play”. As we know that is just a quick fix but I can genuinely say it is the perfect strapline for the Nutritious Lolly Plan – following it day by day will help you work, rest and play. What more could you want?
